7. WILLIE TRAVIS BLAKNEY (WILLIAM THOMAS6, JOHN THOMAS5 , WILLIAM4, THOMAS3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1)

WILLIE TRAVIS BLAKNEY b. September 07, 1907; d. April 24, 1996, Gordo, Pickens Co., AL; m. HERMAN HICKMAN, November 09, 1934. BURIAL: Both at Gordo Cem., Gordo, AL

Travis attended Livingston State University to become an educator. After college, she taught at the one room Marvin Hill School for several years. She then taught at Fariview, located between her family's home and Gordo. This is where she met John Herman Hickman. She continued to teach several years after they were married.

After her two boys were born, they moved to Gordo to be near the hatchery that Herman was developing into a family business. Although a full time mother, Travis helped out at the hatchery after the children went to school. She was a loving parent devoted to her family. She was a longtime member of Gordo First Baptist Church.

Travis loved gardening. She was able to grow many plants, shrubs, trees, bulbs, and flowers because of her nurturing nature. She enjoyed arranging flowers and owned and managed a flower shop for a few years as her children grew and needed her presence less.

It was easy for her to make friends because she was a dedicated friend to many. Her concern for individuals was evident and she would go to great lengths to help those in need. She enjoyed the close and lasting friendship of many acquaintances. She is missed by friends and family alike.
